Rainy Sunday activities that need zero prep

The rain forecast used to fill me with dread. Every indoor-activity article assumes you have a craft cupboard, twenty minutes of setup, and a child who doesn’t eat glue. We have none of those things. Here’s what actually works in our house, in rough order of how long it kills time.

The blanket fort

Chairs, a bedsheet, pillows. Our toddler’s requirements are minimal and strict: the fort must be dark inside, and a parent must be inside it. That’s the whole activity. We read books by flashlight for an impressive stretch of time.

Kitchen “cooking”

A bowl, a whisk, some water, and a few spoons. She “cooks” while I actually make lunch. It’s the same principle as the pancake dinner in our toddler dinner lineup. Let her do the thing, poorly, next to you. Bonus: she eats better when she helped “cook”, a fact I exploit shamelessly. The mess is manageable, and the pocket bibs catch most of it.

Bath time, but early and long

Baths are normally a bedtime ritual, so the timing change alone makes it feel special. Cups, a sieve, a floating duck. Add food coloring for drama if you’re feeling dangerous. Forty-five minutes vanish.

The puddle walk

Rain gear exists for a reason. A ten-minute walk with real puddles, not damp patches, actual puddles, is a highlight of her month. We come back soaked and happy, and I get coffee. This is not a compromise, it’s a hack.

Sticker books

The only purchased item on this list, and they’re two euros. A toddler will apply stickers to a book with the focus of an artisan. When the book is full, the kitchen floor briefly becomes a sticker gallery. Then we move on with our lives.

The one rule

No screen as the first answer. Not because screens are evil. We use them, without guilt, when we’re genuinely out of options. But on rainy Sundays, the first answer being “fort or puddles” changes the whole day’s mood. Screens become the afternoon wind-down, not the opener.
